A place of encounter and platform for open, interdisciplinary discourse in Darmstadt –
Kultur einer Digitalstadt is an interdisciplinary project aimed at cultural professionals and those interested in culture from Darmstadt, the surrounding region and beyond. The Atelierhaus Ludwig-Engel-Weg 1 (LEW1) in Darmstadt is the platform on which the artistic and cultural potential of Darmstadt are examined, presented, developed and networked, and which stand in the spatial and thematic context of Smart City Darmstadt. Through exhibitions, discussions and public events, residents of Darmstadt are regularly invited to take part in discussions on issues relating to the culture and digitalisation of their city (at the location as well as online).

The Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt app is a ‘virtual journey through time’ that uses future history technology to make guided tours of the Mathildenhöhe digitally and thus more interactive.

Good urban planning with an infrastructure that is oriented and develops according to the needs of its citizens – this is not an invention of modern times. In the distant past, individual houses grew together to form settlements. These became cities, which gradually acquired paved roads and the first infrastructure networks for supplying water and electricity and for disposing of wastewater and refuse.

Learning, communicating, expanding one’s horizons. Lifelong learning – today, and especially in the fast-paced times of digitization, little argument is needed for this. Learning can offer new perspectives, be fun, and even protect. No fewer than four Smart City Darmstadt projects contribute to education – each in its own unique way.

Digital for All – How we make it easier for citizens with low media literacy to access the digital world and realize more participation through new media. “Participation is a word that has many meanings,” Thomas (all names changed) reads from an online “dictionary for easy language” and continues: “One also says: to take part in something. Andreas looks up briefly from his tablet, “Oh, I see. That’s what we’re doing here,” and is once again engrossed in his screen.

Climate change is a reality and human involvement in it is beyond question. For a more climate-friendly life in our city, Darmstadt has developed a climate protection concept that bundles a variety of projects and measures and is continuously being developed. The city’s climate report, which was developed in the course of this, shows summer heat islands as well as cold air areas that provide relief. It enables urban planning under aspects of climate protection and climate adaptation.

The internet and media have become an inseparable part of our everyday lives. If we can gain a better understanding of how the media world works and how it affects us, we can be more confident engaging with it. With this in mind, the team from Hesse’s Institute for Media Education and Communication (MuK) is offering free workshops, training courses and lectures as part of Smart City’s House of Media Education project.

Darmstadt digitalisation recognised: fifth place in the 2021 Smart City Index

The kick-off event of the mobile city lab took place on a hot August day in the garden of the Darmstadt Eigenbetriebe und Werkstätten, in keeping with Corona. People with disabilities live and work here. Whether and how digital assistants can benefit them was the subject of the Stadtlabor event.

You can’t possibly talk about digital education for more than 800 minutes in a span of four hours? Of course, you can! At the Digi:BarCamp ‘Education in the 21st Century’, the Mobile City Laboratory’s first online BarCamp on the second nationwide Digital Day 2021. A total of 18 sessions offered presentations, food for thought, exchange of experiences as well as networking opportunities.

The team of the Mobile City Lab Darmstadt set out by e-bike and with a lot of digital technology in their luggage to bring digitalization to places where people are less mobile. To kick things off at the EDW, den Eigenbetrieb Darmstädter Werkstätten. People with disabilities work and live here. The fact that they can be supported and also benefit from digital assistants and applications in everyday life was demonstrated catchily by the dedicated team of the mobile urban lab in the sun-warmed garden of the EDW.

The fourth Stadtlabor Online event addressed the dark side of social media: fake news, trolls and hate speech – all phenomena of digital communication on the Internet and which are clearly on the rise in uncertain times, such as the Corona pandemic.

In the March 21 online event, the “join-in project” of the Stadtlabor on the future of the environment and water in Darmstadt was presented: on a digital platform, valuable information and suggestions for civic engagement for the urban green can be found.
