Smart Waste

Intelligent waste bins share their fill level

In Darmstadt, waste disposal is being optimised so that containers are only emptied when necessary. This protects the environment and also reduces disposal costs.

In the area of waste disposal, the EAD has equipped large containers in public places with sensors that provide the exact filling levels of the containers in real time. Via data transmission using the LoRaWAN network, the sensors inform the employees when the containers are full and can be collected for emptying. On the one hand, the system detects which bins are filled and how, and, using this knowledge, recommends the routes to be taken on the waste-disposal tour. The aim of this technical recording system is to save costs, prevent emissions from collection vehicles and reduce noise created by disposal, because unnecessary trips to empty containers that are not yet full can be avoided.
