1994: A new element

Darmstadt and its own element - as the only German city.

Back to the overview

The new element was artificially created by fusing a lead and a nickel ion. The element’s initial name, ununnilium, is derived from the Latin name for its atomic number 110. On August 15, 2003, the name darmstadtium was accepted by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). In honor of the Darmstadt Society for Heavy Ion Research, which discovered and produced six new elements, ununnilium was officially renamed darmstadtium (Ds) on December 2, 2003. Darmstadt is thus the only German city after which an element has been named.
